Traveling to Alaska and Kodiak


The first step in your journey is getting to Alaska. Several airlines provide daily service into Anchorage from various cities around the world. Alaska Airlines provides reliable and comfortable service from numerous locations from the lower 48 to Anchorage.

We suggest you schedule a couple of days in Kodiak to ensure flexibility in case of weather delay.

We are able to offer floatplane transportation to Kodiak, but Alaska Airlnes is a more affordable and most weather capable option.



Airlines
The next step in your journey is getting to Kodiak. Kodiak is provided airline service from Anchorage by Alaska Airlines Alaska Airlines typcally has two flights with a Boeing 737 Jet. The flight from Anchorage to Kodiak takes between 45 minutes to an hour. www.alaskaair.com

Alaska Ferry
The Alaska Marine Highway system provides ferry service to Kodiak from Homer. The ferry takes about 10 hours to make the trip to Kodiak and makes the journey several times a week on the M/V Kennicott or the M/V Tustemena . http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/index.shtml \

In recent years, the ferry has been somewhat unreliable.

Cruise Lines
Several cruise ship lines have a scheduled stop in Kodiak during in their Alaska cruise packages. They tend to only be in port for 8 hours – which provides only a small window of opportunity for exploring Kodiak. Our tours are very weather dependent, and will be canceled by 9AM if the weather conditions do not improve, to ensure your return to the ship.

Comfort Inn Kodiak - located at the Kodiak State Airport (about 8 miles from town), features a resturant and bar

Shelikof Lodge - located in downtown Kodiak, features a resturant and bar

A Channel View B&B - located near downtown Kodiak

A Smiling Bear B&B - located near Monoshka Bay - about 5 miles from Kodiak - a rental car is recommended

A Eiderhouse B&B - located in Bells Flats - about 12 miles from Kodiak - a rental car is essential


Campgrounds

Fort Abercrombie State Park - located about 4 miles from Kodiak

Buskin River State Park - located between the airport and downtown Kodiak




Activities
to check out while in Kodiak


Kodiak is the 2nd largest island in the United States, yet has less than 90 miles of road to explore. Outdoor activities abound - countless hiking trails exist and there is fantastic sport fishing along the road system and saltwater fishing from local charter operations. ATV and outdoor adventure companies offer day tours to the outreaches of the Kodiak road system. There are also museums in downtown Kodiak which explore the rich cultural history found on the island.
