    • Since 1998 we have provided small group tours for Bear Viewing on Kodiak Island and the Katmai Coast.

    • Wake from Hibernation
    • Bears have recently awoke from the winter hibernation in the snowy mountains, and they venture to the beaches in search of an easy meal. Low tide offers the best opportunity for a seafood breakfast.

    • We are able to land in protected waters
    • Land in the protected waters of the Katmai coast. We survey the area for bear activity and taxi near shore in these breath-taking bays.

    • Front row seats
    • On most trips, we can find a front-row seat to the action, without ever leaving the float of the plane! Bring your Camera!

    • Bears are scattered along the shoreline
    • Bears are scattered along the shoreline, and require a significant amount of 'personal' space from other bears. Our typical viewing distance is from 50 to 100 yards, but ultimately is dependent upon the wildlife.

    • Enjoying a homemade meal
    • Certain situations can allow viewing from shore. Most bears during this time of year tend to be sedentary, in efforts to conserve their energy. There is little food available until the grass sprouts in June.

    • Little to no hiking is required to see bears. Most bears usually give us ten to fifteen minutes of photo opportunities before moving along their way.

    • Cool daytime temps and chilly winds can haunt even the nicest days -- so bundle up with layers, hats and gloves. Most people are happy to find a good heater in our aircraft.

    • Our small group tours allows much flexibility in terms of gearing the tour for you! Since bears are scattered throughout the park shoreline, a little bit of flying usually determines the best location.

    • Bear from the air
    • A well trained eye can easily distinguish between rocks and bears on the shoreline from the air. After a few minutes, you'll be spotting them from the air too!.

    • May is my (Kyle's) favorite time to take bear watchers... because you never know where you will end up or what you might see! I get to spend time drifting on my plane and watching bears!

    • I've seen bears eat kelp, clams, barnacles and even other bears! Every day is an adventure, with nature and the weather.

    • Bears start pairing up for mating season toward the end of May and early June. The bears are almost always more concerned with each other, than us being onlookers.

    • June on the Katmai Coast. Summer is finally here! The grass is green, and bear mating season is in full swing. Katmai and Frazer are both destinations at this time, with Frazer typically starting after the 15th of the month.

    • Bears migrate to the river for salmon fishing! Dog Salmon falls, although inaccessible to people, attracts a huge brown bear population. How many bears do you see?

    • The floatplane lands in Frazer Lake, Kodiak's second larges lake. You pilot will beach the airplane and walk you to the bear viewing area.

    • A 3/4 mile walk awaits. The Alaska department of Fish & Game utilizes this trail to transport supplies from the lake to their fish counting station.

    • A friendly fox helps to provide a highlight along the trail.

    • The Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge . installed many informative and useful directional signs to keep the visitors safe.

    • At the end of the trail lies the bear viewing area!This popular fishing area also serves as a grazing area for bears until the salmon run is at its peak in July.

    • Mama bears and cubs are a common site at this spot.

    • One of the reasons for the great fishing, is the barrier wier and sockeye salmon fish pass. Constructed in 1961, it has helped Frazer to become the second largest sockeye salmon producing system on Kodiak Island.

    • Photograph bear interactions. Most commonly a solitary animal, the high levels of food in a confined area attract a large number of bears.

    • Summer provides nearly endless daylight for the southern exposure of the main Lodge. Over 2400 squre feet of open concept living area provides ample area to share stories on even the rainy days.

    • A reason for a name. Nestled within timber over 150 feet tall, with some trees over 10 feet in diameter, calling the Lodge, 'Big Timber' just made sense.

    • Three private guest cabins sit among the towering spruce timbers. The small blue building is a sauna or 'bayna' as termed by the russian settlers is something everyone should try at least once!
